The Enemy

The Enemy. Hidden, corrupt, evil. Hiding behind a cloak of respectability that was at one time appropriate but now, has been betrayed, corrupted by power and personal immoral and ungodly beliefs, evil to the core and in the service of lies and the prince of all liars.

To whom or what am I referring? The Main Stream Media of the United States of America.

Print and Broadcast media have always been subject to the personal beliefs and bias’s of those who determine what is newsworthy. However, because of competition and the wide ranging scope of individual beliefs and the values of good journalism the MSM was, for some time, relatively ‘fair and balanced’. With the Vietnam war, however, this began to change as those in the MSM, allowed unrestricted access for the first time to the front lines and frightened by the very real horrors of war, began to take it upon themselves to present the news in a way that intentionally influenced public opinion, swaying it against the war and those fighting it.

Surprised by the scope of their effect on public opinion regarding the war, the media awoke and found itself strong. Because of the preponderance of leftwing ideologues the MSM used its newfound power to affect social change, a clear abuse of journalistic principle. This abuse of power began to grow exponentially until it exploded with the election of Ronald Reagan. President Reagan,  frustrated by people like Dan Rather who was so blatantly biased that his reports were more like personal editorials, began to go directly to the people through a series of public addresses. Reagan was such a supreme communicator and was so popular with the American public that many in the MSM, partly out of fear, partly out of hatred and partly out of sheer bitterness and jealousy began to throw off even the pretense of impartiality and attack not only his Presidency but he and his wife personally.

By the time Bill Clinton was in office Media Bias had reached such a level that the American people hungered for an alternative to the blatant leftwing bias in reporting. That opened the door for FOX NEWS. For years FOX reigned supreme in the ratings of news networks. In fact, today FOX still holds the number one spot in network news services with CNN running a distant second. This is a testament to the fact that the vast majority of Americans are not liberal in their thinking and politics. This is contrary to how America is portrayed by the MSM.  Even FOX, however, is not immune to bias. Whether from a liberal bias inherent in the production staff or in some of the anchors themselves, a liberal bias often permeates even FOX. Some have suggested this might be the result of some producers being over-zealous in being ‘fair and balanced.’ Whatever the case even FOX has frequently fallen prey to the demons of bias.

What about reverse, or Conservative bias? FOX certainly is conservative in its editorial broadcasts such as the Sean Hannity show. However their standard news broadcasting is most certainly ‘fair and balanced’. You can say that this is just my opinion but I would refer you to FOX’s ratings once again. It is, of course my opinion. However, it is shared with a vast majority of Americans. All that said, there still remains a vastly out of balance MSM out there doing everything in their power to influence the 2012 elections and insure that President Obama is re-elected.

This has given rise to “Alternative Media” such as NewsMax, Drudge, WND and so on. These Alternates are a natural response to the liberal bias found in the MSM. Even if one were to discount FOX that still leaves three major cable news networks and several network news and print sources all of whom are so heavily and blatantly biased as to require – no - demand an alternative. Hence, Alternative Media. None of this is rocket science. The American people are not so brain dead yet that they are oblivious to the pure propaganda they are being fed by the MSM. The majority of my friends no longer even watch television news, but get all of their news from internet Alternatives.

To me, despite some of the drawbacks inherent in some of the Alternatives such as over editorializing and significant reverse-bias, the Alternative Media is a refreshing and very necessary response to the MSM, which has kept not their first estate but has instead embraced the power they possess, not to inform but to influence. In so doing they have become corrupt and evil.

Why do I say evil? Let me explain: I have friends whose politics come from the left of center. They are educated. Intelligent. Fair minded. Yet, inexplicably, they cannot see the bias in the MSM. Even the blatant bias of MSNBC somehow escapes their notice. Even when I confront them regarding a news story, in this case the coverage of the recent tragedy in Libya, when I presented them with all the facts of the story not just those facts MSNBC decided to present, they were still unable to discern any bias whatsoever. These are decent, thoughtful and honest folk.

I do not expect these people to agree with my political opinions on things, but I would think it impossible to be blind to the bias that is so blatantly obvious. I would think myself mad if there were not so many who see precisely what I see and if there were not so much evidence to the one sided reporting of the MSM. In fact, a September 21, 2012 Gallup Poll indicated that 60% of those polled distrust the MSM.

Since these people I speak of are friends and would have no reason to lie or misrepresent what they really see and perceive I am at a loss to explain their inability to see what was right in front of them. Even if they didn’t agree to an overall bias in the MSM the ridiculously slanted reporting of the story in question should have elicited some acknowledgment. As I said, these are friends and insist they are not misrepresenting their thoughts or dissimilating in any way nor would they have any reason to.  This is, of course, not limited to just my few liberal friends. Rather, people all over the nation from many backgrounds and ideologies seem oblivious to a bias that has been proven to exist.

So, how to explain this strange lack of discernment? How are otherwise bright and well-informed people unable to see what is right in front of their faces? As a man of faith it is obvious that one answer stands out. It is spiritual.

The Bible tells us that until the return of Jesus Christ the world will be under the dominion of Satan. The Bible refers to Satan as the god of this world and the prince of the air. His entire purpose during his time here is to lie and deceive and destroy the work of Jesus Christ which was done upon the cross on Calvary.

2Co 4:3-4  So if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are dying. In their case, the god of this world has blinded the minds of those who do not believe to keep them from seeing the light of the glorious gospel of the Messiah, who is the image of God.

Joh 8:43-45  Why don't you understand what I've said? It's because you can't listen to my words. You belong to your father the devil, and you want to carry out the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and has never stood for truth, since there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies. But it is because I speak the truth that you do not believe me.

Eph 2:2  in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience;

The prince of the power of the air. One cannot consider that verse and not think of the invisible signals which pass through the very air itself bringing the filth and lies of the world right into our living rooms. What better tool could ever have been created to further the designs of Satan. So, if otherwise good people, because of their beliefs and lack of spiritual discernment can be deluded into believing a lie to be the truth and the truth to be a lie – another Biblical truth - what part do those in the MSM play and what, if any, responsibility do they bear for perpetrating this deception on the people.

Let’s start with those in the MSM themselves. What do they say?

"There is no such thing, at this date in the world's history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it.

There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the street looking for another job.

If I allowed my honest opinion to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. You know it and I know it. And what folly is this - toasting an independent press? We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance.
Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes."
John Swinton - New York Times - New York Press Club

"The news and truth are not the same thing."
Walter Lippmann, American journalist, 1889-1974

"News is what someone wants to suppress. Everything else is advertising."
Rubin Frank, former president NBC News

"We tell the people what they need to know, not what they want to know."
Frank Sesno, CNN News

"Our job is to give people not what they want, but what we decide they ought to have."
Richard Salent, former pres. CBS News

These quotes provide an interesting insight into the mindset of those in the MSM. I am certain that there are many good hearted and earnest journalists out there whose bias creeps into their reporting simply because it is an accepted practice in this day and age. There are those others however who, with knowledge and intent, seek to influence people’s perceptions and effect social change through biased presentation of the news. Print and broadcast media are powerful. The media can be a tool or it can be a weapon. Either way it is immensely powerful. It is said power corrupts. The power that the MSM has is corrupting those who wield it.

Hidden behind the cloak of ‘Responsible Journalism’ a corrupt and evil force is covering this land with lies and deception. Whether through a shared ideology or by illicit agreement, the MSM are united in seeking to influence the public regarding the 2012 Presidential election, the true nature of Islam, the truth behind illegal immigration, the benefit of firearms and many more issues crucial to the future of this country.

As Christians, we need to pray! We need to pray that God will give eyes that perceive the truth to the American people. Pray that the Lord would help the people to see through the veil of deception, that He would exhort them to seek out sources of truth instead of simply relying on the same old news they have watched or read for years. We need to pray for the future of this country!
